In defense of local grads, English and PPSMI: An alternative
Posted by: Hafidz Baharom, 11-Aug-2009

Allow me to clarify.

I am a local grad from a local government university in Shah Alam who went for the matriculation program in Melaka after attending a local secondary and primary school in Shah Alam.

That would place me around Section 1, Section 2 and Section 6 in Shah Alam.

I didn't exactly venture that far out of my comfort zone for an education now, did I?

The thing with I abhor most about the current contrast in comments about their English. So I make it a point to state that I'm locally educated, and ask them if my English was horrible.

Obviously, this would shut them up for an instant. Long enough for me to get back to my teh tarik while they come up with the other usual bunch of questions to follow up with.

What language do you use at home? Have you ever lived overseas? Do you have ASTRO? What channels do you watch?

I ask them a simple question.

Does it matter?

Local graduates nowadays have access to a lot more material in English than ever. It is whether or not they have the effort and motivation to pursue it.

They will not have the motivation if every time they try to improve they are branded traitors to their own race or receive other similar derogatory remarks, even if it's just for fun teasing.

And since the PPSMI has all gone to heck to the point that even PTA meetings are barred from meeting, I find it now a necessity for the existence of further English tuition institutions merely for those who can see a future with the need for better English.

The PPSMI was a brilliant conception from a government that lacked such a great step forward.

Unfortunately, the current government did not have the political stomach to sacrifice rural votes for better employment opportunitites for the entirety of Malaysia's future generation.

From this person view (it goes the same to me too)
PPSMI actually moved us towards a new era of globalisation. I wonder why such decision been taken by all that crap people (sorry for that), but its true all these year, learning in english is so much fun for me and I think the other students too. Why do this to them? (our future generation).. They are the one that need to learn in english better because they are our main foundation of the future right??..
So think about..
